Oshkosh Defense Supports Injured Veterans With ‘Honoring America’s Wounded Warriors’ Sponsorship
OSHKOSH, Wis. (March 30, 2011) — Oshkosh Defense, a division of Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE:OSK), is supporting the Wounded Warrior Disabled Sports Project (WWDSP), a partnership between Disabled Sports USA (DSUSA) and the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) as a sponsor of their annual dinner event, Honoring America’s Wounded Warriors, held March 31 at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City. This event raises awareness about the WWDSP – which provides sports programs for severely wounded service members.
“Many of us at Oshkosh have served in the military and appreciate what our service members are capable of accomplishing in the face of severe adversity, on or off the battlefield,” said Andy Hove, Oshkosh Corporation executive vice president and president of Oshkosh Defense. “We know firsthand that wounded warriors can return to active and productive lives after sustaining major injuries, and it’s important to us that they have support to work toward that goal. The WWDSP plays a vital role in the recovery process by supporting the rehabilitation of military members and building their confidence through active sports programs.”
The WWDSP’s more than 500 events in 20 different sports have helped rebuild the lives of more than 3,700 severely wounded warriors and families since 2003. The project provides year-round programs at no cost to the service members or their families. The sports programs include individualized instruction by trained adaptive sports instructors, adaptive sports equipment, meals, lodging, transportation and event fees.
“Oshkosh Defense’s continued support of the Wounded Warrior Disabled Sports Project has enabled Disabled Sports USA to provide severely wounded warriors sports rehabilitation programs. The wounded warriors are excelling at life with increased fitness, employment and social integration, thanks to their involvement in sports” said Kirk Bauer, JD, executive director of Disabled Sports USA and a disabled Vietnam veteran.
Oshkosh Defense has a long-standing history of supporting military members, both in the field and when they return, and their families through charitable giving and program support. The company has partnered with organizations such as Fisher House, USO, Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), Armed Forces Foundation (AFF), Our Military Kids and others. Oshkosh also recruits and employs more than 300 active-duty and retired military members.
